I am accredited by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), and a registered member of The Psychotherapeutic Counselling and Intersubjective Psychotherapy College (PCIPC) and Counsellors and Psychotherapists in Primary Care (CPC). I am a member of the Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse, and the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing.
Experience and Ethos
I have worked as a therapist in private practice, community outreach, and in forensic and psychiatric settings. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups. I have an extensive background of treating general mental health concerns to severe psychiatric disorders.
I apply only evidence-based practice in therapy. My postgraduate training specialised in the four main types of therapy; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic, and Intersubjective. Having the experience of applying these types of therapy truly allows me to specify treatment to each client’s unique needs. I believe that therapy is not a one-size fits all, and it is the therapist’s role to personalise and tailor to each client.
I have held teaching positions at Durham University and the University of Hawai’i, and have lectured at universities throughout the UK and in America. My teaching specialism includes psychotherapy, relationship counselling, youth counselling, abnormal psychology (psychopathology), forensic psychology, and biological psychology.
Research
I completed my PhD. in Developmental Psychopathology from Durham University. My research integrates clinical, neuropsychological, and neurobiological mechanisms to explain children’s, adolescent’s, and adult’s predispositions for violent and aggressive behaviour. I have published over 30 scientific papers in the Journal of Personality Disorders, Law and Human Behavior, Journal of Personality and Individual Differences, Journal of Learning and Individual Differences, and have contributed book chapters to textbooks and handbooks on psychiatry and mental health. I have also published a sole authored textbook on psychopathy published by Routledge. I have presented my research at international conferences, including The Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in the Netherlands, The International Convention of Psychological Science, and the International Academy of Law and Mental Health in Vienna, Austria. My research has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Injury and Violence Prevention, Department of Justice, the Wolfson Institute of Health and Wellbeing, and the British Experimental Psychology Society.
